Doctor Strange is a movie by Marvel, which also takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or MCU for short). It was released in theaters on October 13, 2016 in Hong Kong and November 4, 2016 in the United States. From what I gather it takes place after Iron Man 2 although I thought it took place after Captain America: Civil War. The former sounds more accurate anyway. It is the fourteenth movie based in the MCU and is something of an origin story for Doctor Strange. The movie features Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen Strange, a neurosurgeon who ended up in a car accident, suffering severe nerve damage in both his hands, leaving Strange unable to properly use his hands. When western medicine fails him he goes looking for a means to cure his hands and stumbles upon a world of magic instead where he learns of the mystic arts and everything that comes with it.
I was late coming to the Doctor Strange scene as this movie never came to my town making me unable to go out and see it. As such I didn't see it until it came out on DVD. I'll admit I was a bit hesitant at first when I first heard about it and hearing rumors of Benedict Cumberbatch being in a Marvel movie. I suppose he never struck me as fitting in with the MCU. After seeing the movie however my mind was completely changed and my doubts were gone. Right from the get go I was in love this Doctor Strange. While it took me a second watching to understand what exactly was going on the experiences made it all the more enjoyable to me.
While I love this movie there are still a few things that either threw me off or felt weird. The thing that threw me off most was Benedict Cumberbatch speaking in an American accent. Having watched him in Sherlock and a few other movies where he speaks in his normal British accent it certainly threw me off. It was okay though. It was still fun. The pacing of the movie also felt weird. It felt rushed to me and it seemed like some things felt like they were moving faster than they should have. I suppose there is only so much story you can fit in two hours though so I am going to let this slide, because I still found the entire movie highly enjoyable, and one I can easily watch more than once.
Why I like this movie.
I always enjoy each and every Marvel movie that comes out, but Doctor Strange was different for me I think. I enjoyed it so much more than every other Marvel movie I'd seen. Why is this? I think one of the reasons had to do with the use of magic. I love the idea of magic and to have it as something that could exist in the world, and not just as part of an experiment of an alien race (you may need to watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to understand what I mean), it was an exciting concept. In a way I found it relatable as well, but I don't want to go into too much detail about that to avoid any possible spoilers. All in all I love this movie and would recommend it to anyone who may be interested in seeing it.
